100 Years of History.

On 25th September 1921, Ellel War Memorial was unveiled. Engraved upon it at the time were the names of the 20 men from Galgate who fell during World War One. Later the names of 10 local heroes of the Second World War were added.

To commemorate these men, their sacrifice, and the ensuing 100 years of history since, we are hosting lots of events locally including:

  • WW1 & WW2 History Trail

  • Commemorative Booklet including researched details of the 30 men commemorated.

  • Re-dedication service of the memorial

  • Afternoon Tea and local history displays

Local History Trail

Live your local history. Walk the streets our war heroes walked. Spot the houses our war heroes lived in. Using the booklet above as your guide, follow the trail of the war heroes from WW1 & 2 who lived in Galgate.

Houses where the men used to live will be marked with the poster to the left. Each person has a corresponding number which you can cross reference in your booklet. Who knows? Perhaps a neighbour’s house belonged to a war hero. Find out about their lives.

Look out for posters appearing around Galgate between 18th and 30th September
